Grand Canyon Sky Walk
|
The Grand Canyon Sky Walk is a walkway constructed of clear glass located a mile above the Colorado River in Arizona. This walkway is shaped like a horseshoe and spans 70 feet. You get the ultimate view of the scenery below from this breathtaking viewpoint. Construction began on this amazing bridge in 2004. In 2005, tests were performed that confirmed the bridge is able to withstand a weight of 71 million pounds which is equal to 71 Boeing 747 airplanes. The bridge can handle winds of 100 miles per hour and earthquakes up to 8.0 on the Richter Scale.
The grand opening of the Sky Walk took place in March of 2007. The elders of the Hualapai tribe and former astronaut Buzz Aldrin took the first walk on the bridge. The bridge was actually built by the Hualapai tribe to raise money and give tourists to the canyon a spectacular way to see the landscape. The bridge is not without its share of controversy, however. Some Sky Walk opponents feel that the bridge mars the beauty of the natural landscape. Others are opposed to the commercialization of the area. Regardless of the opposing viewpoint, the Sky Walk is a very popular place to visit.
There is an information center, souvenir shop and dining establishment in the area of the Sky Walk. The area is called Grand Canyon West and is being developed to include accommodations and other attractions for tourists to enjoy. One thing you should know is that you cannot take a camera or any other personal belongings on the Sky Walk with you. Your tour guide can take a picture of you on the Sky Walk for you to purchase. There are various ticket packages available for anyone who wants to walk on this stunning glass bridge.
The least expensive choice for anyone who wants to visit the Grand Canyon Sky Walk is called the Spirit package. This package costs around $74 and includes not only the walk on the bridge but also a variety of other attractions also. You get to explore the Native American village of the Hualapai tribe and visit the ranch where you will see western cowboy demonstrations, a petting zoo and more. The experience of the Sky Walk bridge is one that encompasses the history and heritage of the proud Hualapai tribe who built this magnificent steel and glass structure.
