How Deep Is The Grand Canyon
One question many people ask is how deep is the Grand Canyon? The Grand Canyon is a gorge in Arizona that spans 277 miles in length, 18 miles at the widest point and is a mile deep. Most people are amazed when they actually see the Grand Canyon in person because it is even bigger than they imagined. The history of this natural wonder dates back millions of years. It took at least six million years for the vast canyon to be carved by the Colorado River. The result is a deep, wide canyon with multicolored walls through which the river flows.

There are a variety of hiking trails on which you can travel to the bottom of the canyon. One of the most popular is the Bright Angel Trail. This trail allows for travelers on foot in addition to mule travel. The trail ends at the river and is one of the most widely used trails in the area. You will find that whether you go by horseback or on foot, the trip is a challenging one. Unless you are a very experienced hiker you should probably travel with a group led by an expert guide. There are all kinds of guided tours that can take you to the very depths of the canyon.
Of course, not everyone has the desire to travel to the bottom of the canyon. You might be perfectly happy viewing its majesty from the rim. The most popular area is the South Rim, which is in Arizona and is open all year round. There are a variety of lodges and historic buildings in the South Rim area that cater to tourists visiting the canyon. The North Rim is on the Utah side of the canyon and is not open during the winter. Most people stay within the range of the Grand Canyon National Park which is one of the nation's oldest and most historic.
When you see how deep is the Grand Canyon in person, you will understand why so many people visit this location every year. It is estimated that five million tourists make the journey to the Grand Canyon each year. They come from near and far to enjoy this spectacular gorge that was millions of years in the making. Once you experience the Grand Canyon up close, you will want to return again and again to this breathtaking landmark.
